Storm Cat's stud fee to remain at $500,000 in 2007

Posted: Tuesday, October 24, 2006

The stud fee for [isd]Storm Cat[/isd], the world's leading commercial sire, will remain at $500,000 in 2007 at Overbrook Farm in Lexington.

The 23-year-old Storm Bird stallion has sired 150 stakes winners, 93 graded stakes winners, and eight champions from 1,139 foals in 16 crops of racing age. Storm Cat was bred to 111 mares in 2006, with an in-foal percentage of more than 88%.

The perennial leading sire in the sales ring, Storm Cat boasts 82 seven-figure yearling purchases, including ten at this year's Keeneland September yearling sale, topped by a colt out of the Distorted Humor mare Awesome Humor that fetched $8.2-million.

Storm Cat is also a sire of sires whose sons include leading sires Hennessy, Giant's Causeway, and Tale of the Cat.

Stud fees will also remain unchanged for Overbrook stallions Jump Start ($10,000) and Tactical Cat ($5,000).

Freshman sire Jump Start, a seven-year-old by A.P. Indy, has 12 winners from 35 starters in his first crop, including stakes-placed winners Bold Start, Trophy Road, and Easy Start.

Tactical Cat, an eight-year-old by Storm Cat, has sired 113 winners and 12 stakes winners in four crops of racing age, including four stakes winners this year, led by Wonder Where Stakes victress Like a Gem, who has earned $217,105 this season.

Pioneering's fee was increased from $3,500 last season to $5,000. Offspring by the 13-year-old Mr. Prospector horse were led in 2006 by Grade 1 winner Behaving Badly.

The fees for all other Overbrook stallions have been reduced for next year: Cape Canaveral from $10,000 to $7,500, Cape Town from $15,000 to $10,000, Cat Thief from $10,000 to $7,500, and Grindstone from $5,000 to $3,500.
