Overbrook stallion Carson City dies

Posted: Sunday, December 26, 2004

Multiple graded stakes winner Carson City, sire of 72 stakes winners from 11 crops of racing age, died on Friday at Overbrook Farm in Lexington where he had stood since beginning his stallion career in 1991.The 17-year-old son of Mr. Prospector ranked 14th on the general sire list through Saturday. Among his top progeny are 2002 Canadian champion older female Small Promises, '03 Dubai Golden Shaheen (UAE-G1) winner and millionaire State City, multiple graded stakes winner and former classic starter Pollard's Vision, Grade 1 winner and sire City Zip, and Grade 1 winners Carson Hollow, Cuvee, Flying Chevron, and Pearl City. Carson City sired 492 winners from 619 starters who earned $50,731,731 through December 25.

Overbrook officials had an autopsy performed on Carson City to determine the cause of his death but had not received a report back early Sunday afternoon, Overbrook Stallion Manager Wes Lanter said.

Overbrook bred and raced Carson City, who was the lone foal out of the unraced Blushing Groom (Fr) mare Blushing Promise. Trained by D. Wayne Lukas, Carson City won six of 15 career starts, including the 1989 Sapling Stakes (G2) at Monmouth Park and the '90 Fall Highweight Handicap (G2) at Belmont Park, and earned $306,240. He was to have stood in 2005 for $35,000 for the seventh consecutive year.
