Delaware Township to stand at Padua

Posted: Tuesday, November 27, 2001

Delaware Township, who closed his career with an authoritative triumph in the Frank J. De Francis Memorial Dash Stakes (G1) on November 17 at Laurel Park, will begin his stud career at Satish and Anne Sanan's Padua Stables near Summerfield, Florida. Delaware Township will stand his first season for $6,500.The five-year-old son of Notebook will stand as the property of Padua and Everett Novak's New Farm, which purchased him at the 1998 Ocala Breeders' Sales Co. Calder selected two-year-olds in training sale for $110,000. Carrying the New Farm colors, Delaware Township won 11 of 21 career starts with four seconds and one third for earnings of $996,950.

After finishing sixth—beaten 2 ¾ lengths—in the Breeders' Cup Sprint (G1), Delaware Township made his final start in the De Francis Memorial. He charged down the middle of the track to seize command and drew clear to win by three lengths, leaving Sprint runner-up Xtra Heat and reigning Eclipse Award sprint champion Kona Gold in his wake.

Delaware Township's other victories include the 2001 Forego Handicap (G1) at Saratoga Race Course and the 2000 and '01 Forest Hills Handicap (G2) at Belmont Park.

Delaware Township was produced by the unraced Sunny North mare Sunny Mimosa, a half sister to four stakes winners.
