Tiznow's stud fee to be announced this week

Posted: Monday, November 26, 2001

The stud fee for recently retired two-time Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) winner Tiznow should be announced this week. Doug Cauthen, vice president of WinStar Farm near Versailles, Kentucky where the four-year-old son of Cee's Tizzy will begin his stallion career next year, said on Monday that the price would be "affordable and reasonable."Tiznow arrived at WinStar from trainer Jay Robbins's Santa Anita barn on November 21 and was presented to a group of media and industry members at a reception on Monday. Housed in the farm's stallion complex, Tiznow pricked his ears at the nearby television showing reruns of his Classic triumphs. Eclipse Award winner as Horse of the Year and champion three-year-old colt of 2000, the big, rangy bay stood patiently for photographers for about ten minutes on the lawn in front of the stallion barn.

Tiznow was officially retired on November 16 by co-owner Michael Cooper, who campaigned Tiznow this year with Pamela Zeibarth and Kevin Cochrane, the children of his late breeder Cecilia Straub-Rubens. The trio, who raced under the Cee's Stable banner, retained a 50% interest in Tiznow with WinStar and Taylor Made Stallions each acquiring 25%.

Cauthen said the group is targeting a book of about 100 mares for Tiznow's initial season.

"We expect to be oversubscribed at 100," he said, "and we'll consider more if the right mare happens to come along when we are past 100. We had 45 mares submitted to him the first three days. That tells us we'll be super subscribed. We want an affordable and reasonable price that will encourage breeders to bring their best mares."

Tiznow won eight of 15 career starts and earned $6,427,830. In addition to his Classic victories, his record includes triumphs in the Santa Anita Handicap (G1) earlier this year and last year's Super Derby (G1).

Out of the winning Seattle Song mare Cee's Song, Tiznow is a full brother to Grade 2-winner and $2,840,810-earner Budroyale, second in the 1999 Classic.—Liane Crossley
