Transworld, sire of Lonesome Glory, dead at 27

Posted: Monday, November 19, 2001

Irish classic winner Transworld, who sired five-time Eclipse Award-winning steeplechaser Lonesome Glory, died of old age on June 24 at Maureen and Gary Alexander's Alexander Farm near Byers, Colorado.

The 27-year-old son of Prince John out of *Hornpipe II, by Hornbeam, had stood in Colorado since 1995. Transworld started his stud career in Kentucky at John R. Gaines's Gainesway Farm near Lexington, where he stood from 1978 to '88, before relocating to Barry Schwartz's Stonewall Farm prior to the '89 season.

"He died peacefully," Maureen Alexander said. "There's not a lot of steeplechasing in this part of the country, but he has a lot of good racing foals here in Colorado, too. Around here, everyone has their own stallion in their backyard, but we got a lot of mares in from around the country for him."

From 21 crops of racing age, Transworld sired 228 individual winners from 353 starters, including 19 stakes winners and champions Lonesome Glory and Winton. The sire of five group/graded stakes winners, Transworld had lifetime progeny earnings of $12,351,750 through November 13.

Lonesome Glory won champion steeplechaser honors in 1992, '93, '95, '97, and '99 during a career that featured 24 wins from 44 starts and earnings of $1,325,868. Winton, who won 17 of 29 career starts and $1,345,387, was Horse of the Year and champion three-year-old colt in 1986 in Venezuela. He won four Group 1 events in Venezuela during his career.

In addition to his two champions, Transworld sired Grade 1 winners Powder Break and Only Queens, Grade 3 winner Trans Banner, and stakes winners The Hague, Rich Earth, Trans Caribbean, Zie World, and Extranix.

Transworld, who stood for as much as $17,500 in 1984 at Gainesway, won three of five career starts and earned $38,610. A full brother to champion Protagonist and stakes winner Harbor Prince, Transworld won the 1977 Irish St. Leger (Ire-G1) and was second in that year's Blandford Stakes (Ire-G2).—Tom Law
