Norway to stand in New Mexico

Posted: Friday, November 16, 2001

Norway, a half brother to top Central Kentucky sires and classic winners A.P. Indy and Summer Squall, has been retired and will stand his first season in 2002 at Double L Farm near Bosque, New Mexico.A stud fee has not been announced for the three-year-old son of Storm Cat out of Weekend Surprise, by Secretariat.

Norway topped the 1999 Keeneland July selected yearling sale when he was purchased by Irish bloodstock agent Demi O'Byrne, acting on behalf of Michael Tabor and Susan Magnier, for $3-million. Bred in Kentucky by William S. Farish and W. S. Kilroy, Norway was sent to Ireland shortly after the sale.

Nortway was winless in six career starts with one second and one third for $2,714 in earnings. He last raced on June 30 at the Curragh in Ireland, where he finished 15th in a 1 ¼-mile race on the turf.

Weekend Surprise, who was named Broodmare of the Year in 1992, is the dam of 1992 Horse of the Year and Belmont Stakes (G1) winner A.P. Indy, '90 Preakness Stakes (G1) winner Summer Squall, and Grade 3 winner Welcome Surprise.
