Veteran sire Shahrastani returns to England

Posted: Monday, November 12, 2001

Dual European classic winner and veteran stallion Shahrastani has been moved from Ireland to stand the 2002 season at Walton Fields Stud near Leicestershire, England. The 18-year-old son of Nijinsky II out of Shademah (Ire), by Thatch, will stand for approximately $1,822 (1,250 British pounds). Shahrastani, who previously stood in Kentucky and Japan, moves to England after standing at Clashmore Stud in County Limerick, Ireland.

Shahrastani has sired 16 stakes winners, including champion Dariyoun and seven group/graded winners, from his first 12 crops. Dariyoun was a multiple stakes winner in France who was named champion imported older horse in Spain in 1992. He won seven of 30 career starts for $408,811 in earnings.

Shahrastani is also the sire of Grade 3 winner and $499,665-earner Marastani, Grade 3 winner Kazabaiyn, and stakes winners Porbandar (Ire), Rifapour (Ire), and Blue Daisy. With 130 individual winners from 221 starters, Shahrastani has lifetime progeny earnings of $8,654,962 through Sunday.

Bred in Kentucky by the Aga Khan, Shahrastani won four of seven career starts, including the 1986 Epsom Derby (Eng-G1) and Irish Derby (Ire-G1), for $629,296 in earnings.
