Group 1 winner Lycius moved to New York

Group 1 winner Lycius, who began his stud career in Ireland but since then has sired four American stakes winners, has been relocated from Florida to stand the 2002 season at Mill Creek Farm near Stillwater, New York. The 13-year-old son of Mr. Prospector out of Lypatia (Fr), by Lyphard, will stand for $7,500, $5,000 less than he stood the 2001 season for at Robert Slack's Stoneriggs Farm near Ocala. B. E. Stables bought out former partner Stoneriggs and opted to move the stallion to New York.
"We are thrilled to bring Lycius—a proven graded stakes sire—to New York," said Donna Janis, president of B. E. Stables. "He received excellent support from Florida breeders at a much higher stud fee, but the New York program is incredible and only going to get better with the introduction of VLTs at two New York tracks."
Lycius has sired 20 stakes winners from his first seven crops, including Hello (Ire), a Group 1 winner and highweighted two-year-old colt in 1996 in Italy before becoming a Grade 3 winner in the United States. He is also the sire of stakes winners Self Feeder (Ire), Miss Universal (Ire), Khasayl (Ire), Ivan Luis, and Media Nox (GB).
Lycius has sired 146 individual winners from 236 starters and has lifetime progeny earnings of $7,502,885 through Sunday.
Bred in Kentucky by John and Betty Mabee and sold as a yearling for $500,000 at the 1989 Keeneland July selected yearling sale, Lycius started his stud career in Ireland at Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum's Kildangan Stud, where he stood from 1992 through '96. He stood at Ragusa Stud in Ireland in 1997 and '98, returned to Kildangan in '99, then was sold to stand in Florida prior to the 2000 season.
Second in the 1991 Two Thousand Guineas (Eng-G1) and third '91 Irish Two Thousand Guineas (Ire-G1), Lycius retired with two wins, five seconds, and two thirds from 11 starts for $462,758 in earnings. He won the 1990 Newgate Stud Middle Park Stakes (Eng-G1) at Newmarket and the Prix du Haras de La Huderie at Deauville.
A full brother to stakes winner Tereshkova and a half brother to stakes winners Akabir and Book Collector, Lycius has been well received at the world's bloodstock markets. A total of 91 of his yearlings have been sold for an average of $47,301.
