Ashford sets fees for A P Valentine, Black Minnaloushe

Posted: Thursday, November 01, 2001

Ashford Stud, the American branch of Irish conglomerate Coolmore Stud located near Versailles, Kentucky, has set identical stud fees of $15,000 for its two newest stallions, A P Valentine and Black Minnaloushe. A P Valentine, a three-year-old son of A.P. Indy out of Twenty Eight Carat, by Alydar, won three of 13 career starts with two seconds and two thirds for $864,170 in earnings.

Trained by Nick Zito and campaigned by Rick Pitino's Ol Memorial Stable, A P Valentine won the 2000 Champagne Stakes (G1) and finished second behind Point Given in this year's Preakness (G1) and Belmont Stakes (G1). Coolmore purchased the colt's breeding rights shortly after his game victory in the Champagne, in which he defeated Point Given.

A P Valentine never bounced back from the Triple Crown season and was off the board in his final three career starts, including a dull sixth in the Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1) on October 6 at Belmont Park.

Irish classic winner Black Minnaloushe was campaigned the last two seasons by Coolmore's Michael Tabor and Susan Magnier. The three-year-old son of Storm Cat out of the Group 1-placed Green Dancer mare Coral Dance (Fr) won four of 11 career starts and earned $490,945.

Trained by Aidan O'Brien, Black Minnaloushe posted a two-length win in the Irish Two Thousand Guineas (Ire-G1) at the Curragh in his fourth start of the year and also won the St. James's Palace Stakes (Eng-G1) at Royal Ascot.

Black Minnaloushe, a half brother to 1995 English classic winner Pennekamp, multiple Grade 1 winner Nasr el Arab, and stakes winner Shaal, ended his career with a tenth-place finish in the Breeders' Cup Classic (G1), his first start on dirt, on October 27 at Belmont.
