Japan Cup Dirt winner Kurofune retired

Kentucky-bred Kurofune, winner of the Japan Cup Dirt on November 24, has been retired after suffering a tendon injury in his right front leg. The three-year-old gray son of French Deputy will stand at Shadai Stallion Station on the island of Hokkaido for a fee of approximately $38,229.Kurofune closes his ten-race career with six wins, one second, and one third, and earnings of $3,043,410 for Makoto Kaneko.
Bred by Nick Lotz, Kurofune was consigned to the 1999 Keeneland September yearling sale by Eaton Sales, agent, and was purchased for $70,000 by BNK Stable. He returned to the sales ring at the Fasig-Tipton Calder selected two-year-olds in training sale and was sold by Niall Brennan Stables, agent, for $430,000 to Yoshida.
Kurofune was produced by the stakes-winning Classic Go Go mare Blue Avenue, a half sister to Grade 1 winner Brought to Mind. He is a full brother to Bella Bellucci, winner of the Astarita Stakes (G2) and third in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) at Belmont Park on October 27.
