Grade 1 winner Spinning World sires first Australian winner

Posted: Sunday, December 23, 2001

Spinning World, 1997 highweighted older horse in Europe and winner of that year's Breeders' Cup Mile (G1), is now a dual hemisphere stallion, after siring his first Australian winner—two-year-old filly Coupe—at Moonee Valley on Saturday.Bred by David and Helen Haines under the banner of their Kingston Park Stud, and wearing the colors made famous by the great Kingston Town, Coupe won the Father Christmas Handicap at five furlongs. In just her second career start, Coupe did not appear to have much chance until jockey Brett Prebble found a narrow gap and guided her through for a half-length victory in :59.17 on a track rated as fast.

Coupe is out of the unraced Seattle Slew mare Kingston Coup, a daughter of Spirit of Kingston, a Australian champion three-year-old filly and half sister to 1981 and '82 Australian Horse of the Year Rose of Kingston. Spirit of Kingston is also half sister to Kingston Rule (USA), by Secretariat, winner of the 1990 Melbourne Cup (Aus-G1) in record time.

Spinning World shuttled to Coolmore Australia for the 1998 and '99 Southern Hemisphere seasons, and to New Zealand in 2000, returning to Coolmore's operation in the Hunter Valley of New South Wales for the '01 season. The eight-year-old son of Nureyev, who was also on a one-year lease in '00 at the East Stud near Hokkaido, Japan, will stand the 2002 breeding season at Coolmore's main operation near Fethard, County Kildare, Ireland.

Spinning World won eight of 14 career starts and earned $1,734,477 for owner Stavros Niarchos. He was highweighted at three on the Irish Free Handicap from seven to 9½ furlongs, and accounted for wins in the 1996 Irish Two Thousand Guineas (Ire-G1) and Prix du Haras de Fresnay-Le-Buffard-Jacques Le Marois (Fr-G1), and finished second in the Breeders' Cup Mile (G1) at Woodbine, and the Poule d'Essai des Poulains (French Two Thousand Guineas) (Fr-G1).

He won four of five starts as a four-year-old in 1997, including the Mile at Hollywood Park, where his time of 1:32.77 equaled the course record. He also won the Jacques Le Marois, Prix du Moulin de Longchamp (Fr-G1), and Prix du Muguet (Fr-G2) and was the highweighted older horse on the European and French Free Handicaps from seven to 9½ furlongs

From 40 starters in his crop, Spinning World is represented by 15 winners, including French Group 3 winner Quad's Melody and German stakes winner Chan Chan. His progeny have amassed total earnings of $403,109.—Delamere Usher
