Canadian Broodmare of the Year Loudrangle dead at 27

Loudrangle, one of the foundation mares for Canadian powerhouse Sam-Son Farm, died Tuesday night at the Ontario, Canada, facility from infirmities of old age. The daughter of Quadrangle, who was honored as Canada's Broodmare of the Year in 1986, was 27.Loudrangle was a success on the track, winning two stakes, but excelled as a broodmare. Racing from 1976-'78, she won nine of 22 career starts, including the 1978 Mountain Laurel Handicap at Keystone and '76 Princess Elizabeth Stakes at Woodbine. Retiring after her four-year-old season with total earnings of $105,804, she produced six stakes winners including Ruling Angel—Canada's 1986 Horse of the Year and champion two-year-old filly—and Tilt My Halo, 1988 Canadian champion three-year-old filly.
Her other stakes winners are Tiffany Tam, No Louder, Slew of Angels, and Dancing With Wings.
Loudrangle's offspring continued to pass on her abilities. Tiffany Tam produced 1988 Canadian champion three-year-old colt Regal Intention, who won the Queen's Plate that year for Sam-Son, and two other stakes winners. Ruling Angel's stakes-winning daughter All An Angel produced Mountain Angel, a finalist for a 2001 Sovereign Award as outstanding older filly or mare. Slew of Angels is a sire standing in California, while No Louder is a sire in India.
Out of the Nearctic mare Lady Known as Lou, Loudrangle produced her last foal, the winning Mr. Prospector filly Winged Prospect, in 1989.—Liane Crossley
