Coolmore adjusts fees for Hennessy, Louis Quatorze

Posted: Monday, December 10, 2001

Major juvenile stakes wins late in the season by Johannesburg and Repent have led Coolmore Stud to raise the 2002 stud fees for Hennessy and Louis Quatorze, who both stand at the Irish conglomerate's Ashford Stud near Versailles, Kentucky. Hennessy, the sire of Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1) winner and Eclipse Award challenger Johannesburg, will stand for $45,000 instead of his previously announced fee of $20,000. The eight-year-old son of Storm Cat previously stood for $30,000 (1997), $40,000 ('98), and $45,000 ('99 and '00).

After spending the 2001 season in Japan, Hennessy returns to the United States for the 2002 season. He has sired 71 individual winners from 157 starters, including 11 stakes winners, for global progeny earnings of $5,800,490 through Sunday.

In addition to Johannesburg, Hennessy has sired 2001 Illinois Derby (G2) winner Distilled, Coolmore Lexington Stakes (G2) winner Keats, and Cowdin Stakes (G3) winner Sunray Spirit.

Louis Quatorze, winner of the 1996 Preakness Stakes (G1), will stand for $15,000 instead of his previously announced fee of $10,000. The eight-year-old son of Sovereign Dancer out of On to Royalty, by On to Glory, is one of North America's leading freshman sires and has ten winners from his first 40 starters and progeny earnings of $786,033 through Sunday.

Repent stamped himself as a leading 2002 classic contender with a victory in the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes (G2) at Churchill Downs and a runner-up finish in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile. Also the winner of the Kentucky Cup Juvenile (G3), Repent is the lone stakes winner sired to date by Louis Quatorze, who is also represented by Silent Fred, third-place finisher in the recent Remsen Stakes (G2).

Louis Quatorze stood his first two seasons in 1998 and '99 for $20,000 before his fee was cut in half prior to the 2000 season. He stood the 2001 season for $10,000.
