Regular rider Kent Desormeaux flew from Central Kentucky to Southern California to ride classic winner Summer Bird in a scheduled workout after the second race on Sunday.
Trained by Tim Ice, the chestnut Birdstone colt drilled five furlongs in 1:00.45 in preparation for the Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) on November 7. He covered the opening quarter-mile in :24.42 and a half-mile in :48.56 and galloped out six furlongs in 1:13.03.
"The work was great," Ice said. “This was exactly what we wanted. He looked super getting over the track and he's been getting over it very well ever since we got here.
"Kent had a ton of horse under him and he just let him work on his own, within himself. I'm super-happy with how he's trained here and how he's handled everything. We'll walk tomorrow and he'll go back to the track Tuesday morning."
The front-runner for the Eclipse Award as champion three-year-old male, Summer Bird became the first horse since Easy Goer in 1989 to sweep the Belmont (G1), Shadwell Travers (G1), and Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1) Stakes. Ice said he is slated to breeze again on Saturday, seven days before the Classic.
