Contender Status

Trainer John Gosden had been pointing Raven's Pass for the Breeders' Cup for several months and the victory in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (Eng-G1) on September 27 at Ascot certainly didn't change the plans. The Queen Elizabeth is a Breeders' Cup Challenge "Win and You're In" race and Raven's Pass earned a guaranteed starting berth in the Breeders' Cup Mile (G1) with that victory.

But where the Mile had been the original goal, Gosden is considering a slight alteration to his plans.

"The plan now is to go to the Breeders' Cup and he could run in the Mile or the Classic," Gosden told Sporting Life.

"If the Mile was run somewhere like Belmont with one turn it would be fine, but it is a two-turn mile at Santa Anita and you can get done by the draw so on that basis we will entertain running in the Classic."

Quotable

Trainer John Gosden, after Raven's Pass lost the BGC Sussex Stakes (Eng-G1) on July 30 at Goodwood to dual classic winner Henrythenavigator by a nose:

"We are thrilled with our horse and thank goodness we turned up, otherwise [Henrythenavigator] would have won by four lengths."
