Contender Status

Tiago, who finished fifth in last year's Breeders' Cup Classic Powered by Dodge (G1), had been somewhat of a question mark for a return to this year's Breeders' Cup, but his prospects brightened considerably when he finished second on Santa Anita's synthetic Pro-Ride surface in the Goodwood Stakes (G1), just a length back of winner Well Armed.

His race was even more impressive given the amount of trouble he encountered.

"I was behind horses and I waited to see if there was going to be a split," jockey Mike Smith said. "If there was, I was going to be late in the race. By then, I thought Well Armed would get away. So I waited and cut the corner, then I wheeled out. But another horse kind of wheeled out, too, and it started a chain reaction that sent us way out there. So I took about three steps sideways instead of forward. I would have liked to have seen what those three steps might have become. Maybe the outcome would have been the same. But it certainly would have been a lot closer. Nevertheless, he ran good. He's back on track."

Quotable

Trainer John Shirreffs, after Tiago finished second in the Goodwood Stakes (G1):

"I thought Tiago ran great. He had a little traffic problem, which we all saw.

"I think [it sets us up for the Breeders' Cup Classic (G1)]. We'll see how things go from here. But it looks good."
