Won Shadwell Turf Mile S. (G1) on Oct. 6 at Keeneland
When trainer Tom Proctor entered Purim in the Shadwell Turf Mile (G1) on October 6 at Keeneland Race Course his hope was to "get lucky, get a good trip, and get lucky."
Lady luck was smiling on Proctor that day as Purim, at odds of 20.90-to-1, got up at the wire to hang a neck decision on Cosmonaut.
The Shadwell, part of the Breeders' Cup Challenge "Win and You're In" series of races, assured Purim of a starting spot in the NetJets Breeders' Cup Mile (G1) at Monmouth Park on October 27.
"We had a perfect trip," winning jockey Jamie Theriot said. "I never had to steady. I got him to relax and settle. We got through on the turn at the quarter pole and he ran phenomenal to run down [Cosmonaut] in the lane."
Proctor, who won the 1994 Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1) with One Dreamer, has had only one other Breeders' Cup appearance, that coming in the 2004 Distaff when Indy Grove finished sixth in the Distaff.
By his own admission he is "not one of those guys to run just to run" in the Breeders' Cup, but the automatic entry in place of ten Breeders' Cup points appears to be one of those offers that can't be refused since it currently appears that Purim will run.
