Contender Status

Tough Tiz's Sis has faced some tough competition this year starting with the May 4 Kentucky Oaks (G1) in which she, like most of the rest of the distaff division, was no match for Rags to Riches.

Tough Tiz's Sis rebounded off that effort when she returned to trainer Bob Baffert's Southern California barn and won the June 10 Hollywood Breeders' Cup Oaks (G2).

"After the Kentucky Oaks I brought her back here [Hollywood Park] and gave her a good stiff workout over the track," Baffert said after the Hollywood Oaks victory. "We liked this filly a lot, it doesn't seem that distance is a problem and I liked the way she was in a good spot today. She's a good horse with a nice long stride so she was suited for this Cushion track."

Baffert sent Tough Tiz's Sis to New York where, after a break of over two months, she finished sixth to Lady Joanne in the Alabama Stakes (G1) at Saratoga Race Course on August 18.

When New York racing shifted to Belmont Park Tough Tiz's Sis finished third in the Gazelle Stakes (G1), the race in which Lear's Princess upset the subsequently sidelined Rags to Riches.

Tough Tiz's Sis was only 2 1/2-lengths behind Lear's Princess in the Gazelle and wouldn't need much improvement to be a force in the Emirates Airline Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1).

She showed the kind of improvement Baffert was looking for when she returned to Southern California and ran down favored Hystericalady in the Lady's Secret Stakes (G1) on October 7 at Oak Tree at Santa Anita.

It was her first Grade 1 win but more importantly the Lady's Secret was a Breeders' Cup Challenge "Win and You're In" race, guaranteeing Tough Tiz's Sis a starting spot in the Distaff.

"I think she's finally coming around right now," Baffert said. "She's blooming and her hair looks much better. She's a big filly, so two turns are much better for her, and she was keeping some pretty good company. But I think [the Lady's Secret] was her breakout race."

Although she is guaranteed a starting position in the Breeders' Cup Distaff, Tough Tiz's Sis is not nominated to the Breeders' Cup and her owners would still have to pay a $180,000 supplementary fee. Baffert and owners Watson and Weitman are currently considering supplementing.

Quotable

Jockey Aaron Gryder, who rode Tough Tiz's Sis to win the Hollywood Breeders' Cup Oaks (G2):

"She's got a long stride and she uses little energy to keep her position."
