Trippi's Storm broke the graded stakes win ice in the Kelso Handicap (G2) at Belmont Park on September 29.
The Trippi gelding, winless in seven starts at ages two and three, has blossomed this year for trainer Stanley Hough, finishing second to Sunriver in the 1 3/8-mile Bowling Green Handicap (G2) at Belmont on July 15 and third to Grand Couturier (GB) and English Channel on August 11 in the 1 1/2-mile Sword Dancer Invitational Stakes (G1) at Saratoga Race Course.
The one mile Kelso distance seemed to be a perfect fit and an ideal prep for the NetJets Breeders' Cup Mile (G1).
"We never really knew this horse's best distance," Hough said after the Kelso victory. Obviously, a mile fits him pretty well. If I had to guess, I would say a mile to a mile and an eighth suits him best.
"We would have to consider the Breeders' Cup [Mile]. Obviously, it will be very tough. We'll see how he comes out of it. He ran back a little quick this time, and that would be a little quick again. But it worked this time."
