Contender Status

Although Jazzy is an Argentine-bred, her first seven career races were in South Africa, where she gave a good account of herself including placing in both a Group 2 and a Group 3 race.

Team Valor acquired a 50% interest in Jazzy with the original owners retaining the remaining 50% and she was immediately made familiar with the Monmouth Park track, finishing a nose second in the Incredible Revenge Stakes on July 21, then followed that with a neck victory in the Capades Stakes on August 22 at Saratoga Race Course.

Both of those races were on the turf, and trainer Mark Hennig wondered how she would do on a dirt course.

He found out quickly as Jazzy powered between horses in mid-stretch to post a three-quarter length victory in the Gallant Bloom Handicap (G2) at Belmont Park, her first graded stakes victory.

"She's a neat little horse," Hennig said. "She had trained well going into [the Gallant Bloom}, and I know [jockey Garrett Gomez] had a lot of confidence off the break. She was right in the bridle and handling everything pretty good. The race didn't quite unfold the way we thought it would. Garrett thought the speed would be to the outside, but it turned out to be to his inside. She got a good trip because of it."

Hennig said he would discuss the possibility of entering the five-year-old mare in the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint on October 26 with Team Valor's Barry Irwin.

In subsequent developments Irwin indicated that Team Valor planned to pay a $150,000 supplementary fee to enter Jazzy in the race.

The fee is 15% of the $1-million purse is due to the fact that neither sire Mutakddim or Jazzy were nominated to the Breeders' Cup.
