Teammate has lost her last five starts since winning the Shuvee Handicap (G2) on May 19 at Belmont Park, but she certainly hasn't been ducking the competition.
All five of her losses have come in Grade 1 stakes races in which she was defeated by Ginger Punch, Take D' Tour, Miss Shop, and Panty Raid.
Ginger Punch and Panty Raid are currently probable for the Emirates Airline Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1) on October 27.
A half sister to Grade 2 winner War Front and Grade 3 winner Ecclesiastic, trainer Allen Jerkens needs the A.P. Indy filly to step it up a notch against the competition that she will be meeting again in the Breeders' Cup.
Jerkens was looking toward another Grade 1 outing, the September 30 Beldame Stakes (G1) at Belmont Park, but an ankle injury kept her out of that race.
The veteran trainer was able to give Teammate a Breeders' Cup prep race a week later in the Juddmonte Spinster Stakes (G1) on October 7 at Keeneland Race Course.
The A.P. Indy filly showed no signs of an ankle injury in the Spinster. Despite bumping with Panty Raid at the start, light bumping with Naissance Royale (Ire) at the five-sixteenths pole and having to get through a crowd and going five or six wide in the lane she closed well enough to finish third, only a length back of winner Panty Raid.
Considering the problems Teammate had in the Spinster, trainer Allen Jerkens was understandably happy with the tenacity she displayed in finishing as well as she did.
