Contender Status

Trainer Nick Zito was second guessing himself after Commentator finished sixth in the Alfred G. Vanderbilt Handicap (G2) at Saratoga Race Course on July 28.

The Distorted Humor gelding entered the Vanderbilt just 3 1/2 weeks after finishing third in a fast-paced Tom Fool Breeders' Cup Handicap (G2) in which he contested the lead with Rondo. The pair hit the half-mile pole in the seven-furlong race in a blistering :43.99 before both tired. Commentator was able to hold on for third place in the Tom Fool, but the effort obviously had its effect in the Vanderbilt.

Zito is not making that mistake again and is training Commentator up to either the October 26 Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile or the October 27 TVG Breeders' Cup Sprint. That plan gives the chestnut three months to prepare for his next challenge.
