Talent Search has been on a roll, winning three of his last five starts, a streak that began modestly enough with an allowance/optional claiming race victory on March 15 at Laurel Race Course.
Trainer Mark Shuman then took the Catienus colt to Pimlico where he won the Jim McKay Stakes before finishing second, only three-quarters of a length behind Diabolical, in the Emirates Airline Maryland Sprint Handicap (G3) on May 19.
Shuman gave the chestnut a break before sending him to Monmouth Park for the August 8 Teddy Drone Stakes and a return to ungraded competition.
At six furlongs over the track that will host this year's Breeders' Cup, the Teddy Drone was an ideal indicator of how Talent Search would handle the track and distance of the TVG Breeders' Cup Sprint (G1), and he gave fair warning of what to expect with a 6 1/4-length victory.
Since the Breeders' Cup represents such a demanding class test, Shuman found out just how good Talent Search is on September 30 when he entered him in the Vosburgh Stakes (G1) at Belmont Park and watched the colt finish second to a dazzling performance by Fabulous Strike.
"It was pretty exciting down the stretch," jockey Ryan Fogelsonger said. "He's got such a big heart. He ran an awesome race. Very game. He's the best sprinter I've been on in my short career."
Shuman now plans to give Talent Search another shot at Grade 1 glory in the TVG Breeders' Cup Sprint (G1) on September 28 at Monmouth and made his game plan quite clear.
"He's faster than any horse I've ever seen," Shuman said. "We're going to the front. If someone goes with us, it will certainly hurt our chances, but it will cost them a lot more."
Trainer Mark Shuman, after Talent Search finished second in the Vosburgh Stakes (G1):
"I never bet, but I had to bet him because he was such a big price [18-to-1]. He finished up in front of some great horses."
