Contender Status

Discreet Cat, who won his first six starts, suffered his first defeat on March 31 when he finished seventh, beaten 23 lengths, in the Emirates Airline Dubai World Cup (UAE-G1) at Nad al Sheba.

Discreet Cat had a legitimate excuse for that poor performance since a throat abscess was discovered after the World Cup.

"He came back to our barn on Preakness day, but didn't go to the track for three weeks," said Rick Mettee, Godolphin's top New York assistant. "He hasn't made any noise lately, so I'd like to think we're out of the woods with the throat problem."

Discreet Cat finally returned to action on September 30 in the Vosburgh Stakes (G1) at Belmont Park amid great expectations from his connections as well as the public who made him the 0.95-to-1 favorite.

But the expectations were tempered when the Forestry colt finished third.

"When it came time to really dig down and run, he started getting tired on me," jockey Garrett Gomez said. "He hadn't run since the Dubai World Cup. You put him in an allowance and he gallops. You're talking about Grade 1 horses here, and a Grade 1 race. You're asking an awful lot of him, but we knew if anyone was up to the task, it was going to be him. He was there for me except for when it came time to really bear down and run."

Discreet Cat had been tentatively considered for the TVG Breeders' Cup Sprint (G1), but trainer Saeed bin Suroor is now inclined to head for the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile on October 26 at Monmouth Park.

"He needed the race and should improve off of this race," Suroor said. "He had been working well and was physically sound.

"I think the Mile would be better for him. Six furlongs is too short for him and his race."

Quotable

Rick Mettee, the New York-based assistant to Godolphin trainer Saeed bin Suroor, on Discreet Cat's return in the Vosburgh Stakes (G1):

"I would say this is not the easiest comeback race in the world. He's certainly done enough work to where he is fit, sound, and going into the race in good condition. It's a pretty hot race; it's a deep field with a lot of pace in there. Obviously, we're getting near the end of the year where we can't be too picky about choosing a comeback."
