Contender Status

Idiot Proof had never raced outside of California until trainer Clifford Sise Jr. decided to send him to Monmouth Park, site of this year's Breeders' Cup, to run in the July 4 Jersey Shore Breeders' Cup Stakes (G3).

If Sise was wondering how Idiot Proof would handle the track, the three-year-old Benchmark colt gave him a clear message with a 7 3/4-length victory while traversing the six furlong distance in 1:07.47, eclipsing the 15-year old track record of 1:07.84 set by Gilded Time in 1992.

Returned to California, Idiot Proof's speed proved to be a drawback in the August 10 Real Good Deal Stakes over the new Polytrack at Del Mar, where he finished a well-beaten third.

"There was pressure on all sides for the whole trip," jockey David Flores said after the Real Good Deal. "I never really got a chance to get him to relax. I was trying to hold back--running seven eighths on this track you've got to hold back--but he was competitive and wanted to go. I think the track probably got him.

"They'll take him back to New York or back east and he'll run good. Those are the kinds of tracks he likes."

Evidently the Wygods and Sise decided New York could wait as they sent Idiot Proof to Santa Anita Park for the Ancient Title Stakes (G1) where the Benchmark colt defeated Greg's Gold by three-quarters of a length on the Cushion track.

The Ancient Title is one of the races in the Breeders' Cup Challenge "Win and You're In" series, assuring Idiot Proof of a starting spot in the TVG Breeders' Cup Sprint (G1).

"I thought [jockey David Flores] might go on with it a little sooner that he did," Sise said after the Ancient Title. "I was getting a little heart failure. We just thought we'd be laying second to Bordonaro and then turning for home do just like we did at Monmouth, just open up. But then, here comes this one, here comes this one, and David was still sitting kind of nonchalant.

"We may have found another dimension, but we'd still rather use what his best weapon is, which is speed. It's a little easier. You can't get that cute."

Quotable

Trainer Clifford Sise Jr. on how Idiot Proof got his name:

"[Co-owner/breeder Martin Wygod] is on the phone with New York conducting business all day long, and to accelerate matters, he always says, 'Make it idiot proof.' He likes to keep things simple and not complicated. Just make it idiot proof.

"So Pam [Wygod] would hear that term, and she said one day she would call a horse that, and he's the one that got the name.

"It's a fitting name, too, because he's an easy horse to train--idiot proof."
