Fifth in Flower Bowl Invitational S. on Sept. 29 at Belmont
Contender Status
Argentina (Ire), out of action since finishing fifth last October in the Flower Bowl Invitational Stakes (G1) at Belmont Park, made an encouraging return to the races on July 28 as she charged up the inside in the Diana Stakes (G1) at Saratoga Race Course, falling only three-quarters of a length short of winner My Typhoon (Ire).
Argentina has been graded stakes-placed five times, but is still in search of her first graded stakes victory.
Trainer Bobby Frankel is following the same path as last year when Argentina finished second in the Diana before running in the Flower Bowl.
This year's Flower Bowl failed to duplicate last year's running as Argentina was outrun early but finished well enough in the latter stages to finish fifth, beaten just 1 3/4-lengths.
Considering that last year's Flower Bowl winner My Typhoon could only manage to struggle in eighth in this year's running, Frankel has to be thinking Breeders' Cup for the Sadler's Wells mare.
