Indian Vale's third place finish in the Personal Ensign Stakes (G1) on August 24 at Saratoga Race Course shouldn't discourage her backers.
Jockey John Velazquez was forced to go wide on the backstretch before taking the lead on the far turn. The chestnut weakened in the stretch after her efforts while posting her first loss at Saratoga. She won a pair of allowance races at the Spa in 2005.
Trainer Todd Pletcher decided on the Beldame Stakes (G1) on September 30 at Belmont Park for Indian Vale's tuneup for the Emirates Airline Breeder's Cup Distaff (G1)in which she faced another Pletcher trainee, Unbridled Belle.
Only a head separated the two at the end of the Beldame with Unbridled Belle prevailing.
"It's unfortunate that sometimes you have to run them together, but it was the right thing for both fillies and both owners," Pletcher said. "I think they both ran well enough to go forward."
Indian Vale made only one start last year, finishing a well-beaten fifth to Take D'Tour in the Shuvee Handicap (G2) on May 21 at Belmont Park. Ankle problems kept her on the sidelines until her return to action this year on March 31 with a victory in the Next Move Handicap (G3) at Aqueduct.
A winner of four graded stakes races, the five-year-old A.P. Indy mare could relish a return to Monmouth Park, where she won her maiden debut in 2005.
