Contender Status

After winning the May 28 Metropolitan Handicap (G1) at Belmont Park, Corinthian went to the other extreme in the June 30 Suburban Handicap (G1) at Belmont, finishing sixth and last.

"The Suburban has been a real head-scratcher," trainer Jimmy Jerkens said. "We went over him and it's turned out to be a mystery. You've just got to forget about it and move forward."

Jerkens intentionally gave Corinthian a two-month break in anticipation of rebounding in the September 1 Woodward Stakes (G1) at Saratoga Race Course.

Corinthian gave a good account of himself up to a point in the Woodward, racing wide and making a threatening move on the turn of the 1 1/8-mile race as he moved into second. But he had nothing left for the stretch drive as Lawyer Ron powered away from the field for an 8 1/4-length victory. Corinthian finished fourth, beaten 10 1/4 lengths.
