Set Play ran into a buzzsaw in the form of Tasha's Miracle in the August 8 Sorrento Stakes (G3) at Del Mar, but with Tasha's Miracle sitting out the Del Mar Debutante Stakes (G1) Set Play got her chance to shine with a two-length win over Spring Awakening.
"We've been trying to get her to relax and not move too early," trainer Peter Miller said after the Debutante. "She moved too early in the Landaluce [Stakes, finishing third] and she showed too much speed to my liking in the Sorrento. [Jockey Brice Blanc] is a magician at getting horses to relax. Bobby Frankel uses him on a lot of tough horses to ride. He rode a tremendous race and I had the utmost confidence in him and in the filly, because he had worked her three times and he knew how good she was--and so did I."
Set Play then threw in a puzzler in the Oak Leaf Stakes (G1), racing close to the leaders early, made a move between horses but then failed to go on, finishing seventh, five lengths back of winner Cry and Catch Me.
