Contender Status

Greg's Gold missed all of 2006 due to a tendon injury suffered in late 2005, but a new stem-cell procedure seems to have given the six-year-old gelding a new lease on life.

Greg's Gold parlayed a neck second to In Summation in the July 29 Bing Crosby Handicap (G1) into an August 19 victory in the Pat O'Brien Handicap (G2), both races over the new Polytrack at Del Mar.

The Pat O'Brien is one of the races in the new Breeders' Cup Challenge "Win and You're In" series which assures Greg's Gold of a starting spot in the TVG Breeders' Cup Sprint (G1).

Trainer David Hofmans decided to prep Greg's Gold in another Challenge race, the October 7 Ancient Title Stakes (G1) at Oak Tree at Santa Anita, and Greg's Gold almost became the first horse to win two Challenge races, failing to catch winner Idiot Proof by three-quarters of a length.

"I tried [to get through in the stretch]," jockey Victor Espinoza said. "For a minute, it kind of opened up and then closed right up again. It's one of those things. In a short field, it always happens--everybody's always on everybody else's horses. It's one of those things--if I get lucky, I get through and win the race, but not today.

"Sometimes we do the smart things and you think you do the right things, but things change."

Quotable

Jockey Victor Espinoza, after finishing second aboard Greg's Gold in the Ancient Title Stakes (G1), the colt's final prep for the TVG Breeders' Cup Sprint (G1):

"He came out good and galloped strong. We'll see what happens for the next one."
