Contender Status

Attila's Storm has been plagued by foot problems this year in the form of a quarter crack in his left front foot, but returned from a 4 1/2-month layoff on July 28 to finish second to Diabolical in the Alfred G. Vanderbilt Handicap (G2) at Saratoga Race Course.

He followed that with a third place finish to Midnight Lute in the Forego Stakes (G1) on September 1 at Saratoga Race Course, which will probably be his last start prior to the TVG Breeders' Cup Sprint (G1).

Trainer Richard Schosberg prefers to give the five-year-old bay as much time as possible before his third consecutive appearance in that race.

Attila's Storm finished fourth in 2005 and fifth last year.

Quotable

Trainer Richard Schosberg, on Attila's Storm's second place finish to Diabolical in the Alfred G. Vanderbilt (G2):

"Not only did he [jockey John Velazquez] ride him beautifully that day, he also gave us some great insight. We were down on the inside, and Johnny didn't think our horse saw Diabolical in time. He dug in once he did, but it was too late. Based on his recommendation, we decided to open up the blinkers."
