Contender Status

It is not difficult to root for Octave when one of the objectives of co-owners Donald Lucarelli and Jack and Laurie Wolf of Starlight Stable is to give something back to the sport.

Prior to the Alabama Stakes (G1) the partnership said they would donate 5% of the filly's earnings to the Northeastern New York chapter of the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Lucarelli was approached by Mark Cusano, a racing analyst and handicapper whose Make-A-Wish charity program is in its 20th year on Saratoga-area radio station WGY.

"If they had said one or two percent, I would have said 'Thank you very much,'" Cusano said. "Five percent is ectremely generous. These are people that have been very successful in life, and they're willing to give back."

Lucarelli and Starlight have previously contributed funds from Octave and their three-year-old colt Sam P., to The Race for Education, a Lexington-based national scholarship foundation that offers tuition and job assistance for those seeking to work in the industry. The Wolfs are members of the organization's board of directors.

"We're always donating to things that make sense, things that are going to give a little bit of joy and a smile," Lucarelli said.

Octave tuned up for the Emirates Airline Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1) with a second place finish to wire-to-wire winner Bear Now in the Fitz Dixon Cotillion Handicap (G2) on September 22 at Philadelphia Park.

Octave, the winner of this year's Mother Goose Stakes (G1) and Coaching Club American Oaks (G1), continued her enviable record of never finishing off the board in 12 starts with a record of 4-7-1.

Quotable

Trainer Todd Pletcher, after Octave finished third in the Alabama Stakes (G1), her only career finish worse than second:

"I think she was clearly bothered. No one would argue with that. The one thing I will say is that the stewards have been very consistent at this meet. They haven't taken anyone down [from first place] for anything they've done. Like [former jockey] Angel [Cordero Jr.] said, i
