Contender Status

Trainer Bobby Frankel admitted that he was a little concerned about the 1 1/8-mile distance of the Go for Wand Handicap (G1), but he certainly had no doubts after the race as Ginger Punch was pulling away at the end for a six-length victory.

"She relaxes behind any kind of pace," Frankel said. "Usually if she goes easy the first part, she kicks in pretty hard the last part.

"She always was good, we had to stop on her for what they call 'chondroma' that were little pimples on her throat and we had to laser them off or eventually they'd block her airway."

Ginger Punch parlayed her Go for Wand victory into a three-quarter length win on September 8 in the Ruffian Handicap (G1) at Belmont Park, her second consecutive Grade 1 victory, before faltering slightly in the Beldame Stakes (G1) on September 30.

Ginger Punch stayed close to the pace in the Beldame and came three wide into the stretch but tired in the last furlong of the 1 1/8-mile race to finish third, beaten less than three lengths.

The four weeks between the Beldame and the Emirates Airline Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1) fits Frankel's plans perfectly.

"If you run her three to four weeks apart, she does great," Frankel said.

Although Ginger Punch received a free pass to the Emirates Airline Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1) after winning the Go for Wand, one of the races in the Breeders' Cup Challenge "Win and You're In" series, owner Frank Stronach would still need to pay a supplementary fee of $180,000 (9% of the $2-million purse) to enter the Distaff.

After considerable debate and discussions with Frankel, Stronach announced on October 16 that they would pay the supplementary fee.

"She's doing well and everyone is happy, with her, so we've pre-entered her and hopefully we can win it," Mike Rogers, Stronach's racing manager, said.

"It is a very competitive race," Frankel commented. "Whoever runs their race will be the winner."

Quotable

Trainer Bobby Frankel, after Ginger Punch received an automatic berth in the Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1) by winning the Go for Wand Handicap (G1):

"The Breeders' Cup is a long way away. You have to keep them sound. Strawberries today, jam tomorrow."
