Contender Status

Grand Couturier (GB) not only won his first graded stakes race in winning the Sword Dancer Invitational Stakes (G1) on August 11 at Saratoga Race Course, it was the first Grade 1 winner for trainer Robert Ribaudo.

Now Ribaudo is looking forward to his first starter in a Breeders' Cup race.

"He's a typical European-style horse," Ribaudo said after the Sword Dancer victory. "He's had some issues, nothing serious, but we had to deal with them and he didn't adjust to our ways right away. Grass horses can stay around forever; hopefully, this horse can have a long career."

Grand Couturier followed his Sword Dancer victory with a third place finish in the September 8 Man o' War Stakes (G1) at Belmont Park at 1 3/8-miles.

Seventh and last for the first mile, the Grand Lodge colt swung wide into the stretch for room and closed strongly, suggesting that 1 1/2-miles is his ideal distance.

His Sword Dancer victory and the upcoming John Deere Breeders' Cup Turf (G1) are both at 1 1/2-miles.
