Lawyer Ron has a somewhat unique distinction.
After owner-breeder James T. Hines Jr. passed away, the estate was so close to retiring Lawyer Ron to stud that he has a two-page ad in the Thoroughbred Times 2007 Stallion Directory.
Very few horses have a stallion ad the same year they are competing at the highest level.
Lawyer Ron was a superlative three-year-old, but he is proving even better at four. He has made seven starts this year, the last six in graded stakes races, and set a new track record of 1:46.64 winning the 1 1/8-mile Whitney Handicap (G1) at Saratoga Race Course.
He enhanced his eventual stud value even more on September 1 as he demolished seven foes, and possible derailed the Breeders' Cup hopes of several of them, with an 8 1/4-length victory in the Woodward Stakes (G1) at Saratoga Race Course.
"I think he has established himself as the top older horse in training," trainer Todd Pletcher said after the Woodward. "Now, we have to see how he matches up against some of the three-year-olds."
One of those three-year-olds, Curlin, proved good enough to run down Lawyer Ron in the stretch to win the Jockey Club Gold Cup Stakes (G1) on September 30 at Belmont Park.
Lawyer Ron only lost the Gold Cup by a neck, which certainly didn't discourage trainer Todd Pletcher.
"I thought he ran great," Pletcher said. "The only thing we were concerned about happened: he never quite settled like he did in Saratoga. He was very sharp and he never gave up. He ran a big race and actually galloped out in front. I don't think the mile and a quarter is an issue, we just have to get him to settle down."
October 22 - Jogged one mile over Belmont's training track.
"At this stage of the game, you just want to maintain what you've achieved so far," trainer Todd Pletcher said. "The main thing is to keep them all happy. Lawyer Ron is doing well. He was aggressive yesterday [October 21], but controllable."
October 21 - Five furlongs breezing in 1:01.26 at Belmont Park, dirt training track fast. Fifth best of 23 workouts at the distance.
October 14 - Five furlongs breezing in 1:00.45 at Belmont Park, dirt training track fast. Fourth best of 36 workouts at the distance.
