A host and analyst with HorseRacing Television, Laffit Pincay III was destined to a life in horse racing.
While most fans are aware his father, Laffit Pincay Jr., had won more races than any other U.S.-based jockey in history when he retired in 2003, Pincay III’s roots are deeper than that. Laffit Pincay Sr. rode in Central and South America for many years. Pincay III’s grandfather on his late mother’s side, William Radkovich, owned Thoroughbreds. In partnership with Wilbur Clark, Radkovich started Ronnie’s Ace in the 1961 Kentucky Derby and Wil Rad in ’64.
While Pincay jokes that he joined HRTV “because nobody in the [National Football League] knew who Laffit Pincay Jr. was,” the analyst said horse racing is in his veins. He loves the game and enjoys following in his father’s footsteps.
“My father wasn’t designed to be a jockey,” Pincay said. “He forced it and made it work. He showed me at a very young age that if you wanted something bad enough, all you had to do was go out and get it.”
Despite the difficulties currently facing racing, Pincay is optimistic.
“The game is still fundamentally sound,” he said. “Horses still run fast and the fans still love to watch and wager. Most of the problems seem to lie within the politics and economy. California racing, specifically, seems to be in a state of flux. But it’ll all work itself out. Everything is cyclical.”
