KRISTIN HIX
Jockey Club
Kristin Hix wasted little time using her position as a legal associate at the Jockey Club to help make Thoroughbred racing safer and more hospitable to horses.
Hix, 29, has been an active facilitator of the Welfare and Safety of the Racehorse Summit as well as one of the upstarts who got the Jockey Club to begin a checkoff program for foal registration that provides funds to charities that benefit the aftercare of racehorses.
“It’s an area that means a lot to me and that I’m passionate about and that I want to inform others about,” Hix said. “I’m always amazed at what we’ve done from the first summit until now. The industry is really behind it now. We just need to keep up the level of participation and keep the good ideas coming.”
Hix started at the Jockey Club during her undergraduate years as a political science major at the University of Kentucky. A dorm mate of Hix’s who worked at the Jockey Club told her about the job because she knew she liked horses. Hix credits Jockey Club executives Alan Marzelli (former president), Dan Fick (former executive director), and Jim Gagliano (current president) with nurturing her career.
