JAMIE LaMONICA

The Stallion Co., Empire Stud, Starquine.com

As president and co-owner of three equine companies, it is fair to say Jamie LaMonica is ingrained in the horse business.

LaMonica’s The Stallion Co. is based in Lexington and specializes in evaluating and placing stallions, buying and selling seasons and shares, and offering mating advice.

Empire Stud in Hudson, New York, was home to six stallions in 2010, including Posse and Repent, who were ranked first and second, respectively, among New York-based stallions in 2010 progeny earnings through June 13. And LaMonica’s Starquine.com is an online listing of horses for sale.

“I guess you could say I’m an equine entrepreneur,” LaMonica said. “We have three companies, and we are a full-service bloodstock agency that tries to accommodate our clients in any way they could need. I’ve been very fortunate because in this economy that diversity has been a saving grace.”

LaMonica’s successes included purchasing equity in and assisting in the placement of 2009 leading freshman sire Offlee Wild at Darley in Lexington. He aided in the buying of shares and the brokering of the deal that sent Pollard’s Vision, who ranked third among freshman sires last year, to Wintergreen Stallion Station in Midway, Kentucky.

LaMonica lists his biggest professional achievement as the development of City Zip into a sire.

“It has been a very rewarding experience,” LaMonica said. “From owning a very small piece of him while he was running, to buying/brokering him after he retired from racing, syndicating him with Gus Schoenborn getting him to Lane’s End, and watching him become what I consider to be a tremendous sire like his father and move his mares up.

“It was hard work, I learned a lot, and I was rewarded for the effort.”
